Aaaaand we lost another one

There were 5 of us that came from my class. 3 deckhands and 2 servers. I am the only surviving deckhand. One walked off the second day and this one left this morning.

We need 7 and we are down to 4. 2 girls and 2 guys. My bff Lexi and I have been in the same shift as my other bff Trevor who also left on vacation this morning. Lexi and I are both 5 ft nothin, so they’re likely going to break us up so we don’t have two small girls doin a man’s job.

While I was finishing my security rounds which end up in the helm, the captain and my boss were there. My boss said, “I can’t believe we’ve had 3 walk offs” I wanted to get outta there as soon as I could cause if he asked me my thoughts…oh boy. But as I was headed for the door, Capt said “Stacy, weren’t they both classmates of yours?” I said “yes sir”. “Why do you think they walked off?” He said. I said “ do you want the honest truth?” And I smiled. He said “give it to me”

Well when people come to work here, they expect hard work and long hours, but when you get that and just sleep, without an ounce of joy in your day. Why would anyone stay unless they felt trapped?

My boss chimed in and said “My dad spoke true words that I live by. ‘life sucks, and then ya die’. I laughed and said “my motto is, life is short don’t so sucky things”.

The captain also said “that’s no way to live. You don’t find an ounce of joy in your day here?”

I said “the majority of the staff are miserable and complaining constantly, that brings you down. I can’t get a cup of morning coffee and fresh air before I sacrifice my soul for this company for 12 or more hours a day, 7 days a week, 6 months straight. The work is non stop grueling…and I mean NON stop. There is no balance in the work load, we are pushed to the max without a thought.”

They both just kinda sat there. I said okay bye. As I walked away, my boss said “ you’re not leaving are ya? I replied “ya never know”
