So when COVID happened, and postponed my travels, it threw a wrench in the timing of finding a job on a yacht, as it is hurricane season here now and most yachts have gone up to the Hamptons for milder weather or to the Bahamas and deal with the humidity. I still have a class to take tomorrow and Friday, but have submitted my resume to a few captains…
I received a call today from Davar who is looking for a deckhand/stew. We chatted for a bit. He just purchased a larger yacht than he’s used to and now needs help manning the vessel. I would be the only crew member, so I will need to learn EVERYTHING. I’m very interested that he is interested in someone my age with absolutely no experience. So I schedule a meeting. I text my friend here to let her know which marina I’m going to, the boat name etc. I call the marina and inquire about the man that owns the boat. They say he’s very nice and that he’s actually out on the yacht with his family now. I walk out to the dock, and sure enough, there is this beautiful yacht pulling into its slip, with 3 couples and their kids. Davar’s daughters, son in laws and grandkids. I immediately feel at ease. I meet the family and they go on their way. Davar and I discuss the logistics of what we each are expecting. I explained, I just want to learn as much as I can to add to my resume, and have fun while doing it. We find we have similar family values. I will have my own private living quarters, chores in the morning, after coffee ofcourse, then the day will be at sea. By dinner time we will be in our next port. He wants to take 3 weeks to make it from here to the Hamptons. He says there is so much history and beautiful things to see along the way. He asks what I need to do to tie things up here. I said just find a place to store my jeep while we are up North. He said he has a home in Miami and I am more than welcome to park it there! So I finish school Friday at 5 pack up and head to Miami, drop the jeep off Saturday morning and catch the train to meet up with him wherever he ends up being at that time. He said he leaves the yacht for about a month and a half in September, so she’s mine! Family can come visit me, whatever I want! Man things are just about perfect!
Wow! I am so glad to hear that things are coming together for you! Wait- does this make you my sea cousin?
