Davar takes his grandson home and tells me, when he gets back, I better not be on the boat. Go enjoy my day. It’s a bit overcast but I put my suit on and lay out in the front lounge area of the boat. The sun never comes out and it’s starting to get chilly. I make a pedicure appointment and eat some lunch. And guess what? It starts to rain. Cancel pedi and wait for rain to stop so I can dry the boat.

Think it’s gonna be easy, out of the routine, fun, different. The boat needs its service so we are taking her to a service marina. Davar and I laugh as we try to undock leaving some lines and taking some. With this type of dock he has to move the front of the boat close to the Pylon on the left so I can grab that line. Then he maneuvers close to the right so I can grab that one.

My oldest and middle daughter planned a vacation months ago. Not knowing where I’d be, I didn’t book, but hoped that it would work out to join them

The long days got longer, the expectations higher from what I’d signed up for in my interview. A relative of the boss came on with friends as our guest. She had a different idea of my job description than I did, and possibly her idea aligned more with what my boss was thinking. I felt slightly ganged up on. But checked myself to not react. I thought, this is simple. If he’s wanting more than I’m willing to give, we simply part ways and he flies me back to Ft. Lauderdale, where I connect with a new yacht. No stress. He shared his concerns, I shared mine.

My boss is flying back to miami for a few days. So I’m flying to Cancun next Tuesday-Saturday! Today we picked his daughter, her husband and 4 of their friends up. We decided to drop anchor and spend the night at sea tonight!

Big mistake…big mistake …huge

So today was my day. It was another balanced day of duties. I was refreshed and had the energy to do myself up with the outfit I bought after the store owner wouldn’t let me in. I come out of my room and my boss and his guests see me. They are so used to seeing sweaty, tomboy, no makeup deckhand, that they couldn’t believe I was the same person. Not that I looked cute…I just look really bad the first half of my work day.

On deck 6:00am. The air is dryer this morning, not much dew to dry. Takes me about an hour to do the whole boat. Guests are sleeping so I can’t do interior. So I check the strainers and bilge area. Clean those in both the engine room and the back portion. My boss says we have 7 guests today. I tell him what I’ve accomplished in the last few hours, and what else would he like done. he says nothing really, just prepare a snack plate for guests. I decide to shower and refresh, make the snack plate, run a hilarious errand…my family knows the story, but because it involves a guest I won’t give details here. We depart around 2pm. Im feeling awesome so I offer to bring wine up. My boss was a bit shocked, as I usually hide so the guests don’t rely on me to serve. After all I am a deckhand. We go to the coolest place for lunch. Get back around 6. I finish drying the boat about 8:30. I eat dinner sitting on the upper deck looking at this view thinking…what a glorious day!

Kinda a day off
Last night before I go to bed, he excitedly says “what’s tomorrow girl?huh? Huh?” I smile and say “my day off!” He says just dry her off and the day is yours. So I get up at 5:45 on deck by 6am as usual. He gets up about 8:30, I’m almost done drying. It’s nice to not be going anywhere. I can take my time and make sure she doesn’t get any spots. He says let’s walk to get a coffee and I’ll show you around the town so you’ll kinda have an idea where to go while I take the family out again. Adorable little town but man everything is pricey! These people definitely are not my circle. Ha ha. As we’re having coffee he says ok, so go back to the boat do beds and heads and your off! I thought to myself…umm so what your saying is I have to do all my normal chores, but today I don’t have to do any extra stuff? It’s now 9:15, he’s taking the boat at 11:00, I haven’t even showered to be ready for my day and I have to make beds, clean bathrooms, vacuum the whole place and mop the kitchen floor. I race back to the boat and get everything done by 11. I take a short stroll to the beach. It’s hot and the water is tempting. But it looks just like our water, you can’t see what’s down there…where your feet are walking. But I have to cool off so I go in, it’s nice. Time for lunch so I walk to town. I felt like Julia Roberts in pretty woman. Everyone looks at you head to toe. One store lady’s door was closed. The sign said no more than two people at a time because of COVID. I waved at her and said is it ok to come in. It didn’t look like anyone else was in there. She looked me up and down and shook her head no! Wowza. Gonna have to step up my fashion game. So I bought 2 cute rompers. One is pretty sexy. One of those foofy hats the ladies wear, some big sunglasses. I’m gonna put my outfit on and go back to her store and say “big mistake…huge!”
Found my kinda people bar. It’s where the crew supposedly hang out. They were dead because the city will only allow a bar to be open if people are buying food. All the crew people just wanna drink, so I didn’t find anyone. But the owner and the bartender and I shared stories and made good friends. Avoided coming back too soon cause the boat will need a good rinsing and drying after her day out. Came home and went to bed. He partied in until 3am!
And this is our home for the summer

Yesterday I washed and completely dried my GiGi. Did some laundry as well. My boss went to a friends house for the day. He came home this morning while I was drying the morning dew off of her before we head out. The sea was calm as a lake, I was able to get all of the inside wood polished as well as my normal chores. As we approached sag harbor, there were boats everywhere, which made the water rough. I noticed my boss slowing down when crossing a wake, so as to not splash salt water on my freshly cleaned girl. I thought that was so sweet

As my boss has made this trip several years, around the same time every year he mentions to me that at 9am, I’m going to get to see the Statue of Liberty up close and personal. I almost couldn’t stay focused on my morning chores. I wanted to absorb the moment, feel what people felt when they arrived on boats hundreds of years ago. I am a proud American Citizen. I’m proud of what she and this country and our flag represent. I know there are many immigrants who also respect her ,our flag and our country. And when I saw her for the first time I felt connected to all of those people who she stands for. I cried. I felt silly In front of my boss. But he to felt it. He stood and faced her and said thank you! And he meant it from his heart.
