Still submitting resumes like crazy. My second call back was from a stew hiring someone to do exterior. She and I chatted on the phone sharing job expectations and my experience. She loved me, felt connected and wanted to hire me on the spot. But out of formality, I needed to interview with the captain.
I explain I have another interview tomorrow morning, however I’m very interested in this position, if you think we are a good fit and meeting the captain is just a formality, I can cancel my other interview. She said you are exactly what we are looking for, cancel the other interview.
I cancel, the other one, and show up to meet the captain. He seems pleased, my salary requirement is inline with the job and they will let me know. Long story short, she never had approval from the owner to hire anyone, so when she brought the information to him, he said no!
I apply for daywork. The captain needs a deckhand who can handle lines and fenders with the stew portion being, serve premade sandwiches and sodas to 14 teenagers. Easy breezy. The guests arrive at 6pm but for some reason he wants me to report at 9am tomorrow, so I do. Another long story short; I show up and there about 15-5 gallon buckets sitting on the aft deck. He is changing the oil in both engines as well as both generators. On the day of charter!!!! He says your resume looks like you’re pretty handy, I need you to hold some hoses for me while I pump the oil out and fill everything back up
I am the kinda person who can roll with just about anything so I agree. But guess what? He’s the one sitting in the engine room in front of a fan (mind you, it was so hot the fans didn’t do much. It was pretty uncomfortable down there, but hotter outside) he had me carry 5 gallon buckets of old oil, up the stairs from the engine room, up the stairs to the aft deck and down stairs to the dock. Then on my way back bring a 5 gallon bucket of good oil down. I made the trip 15 times, carrying those buckets!
Finished the charter, Got home at 4:30am the next day and he didn’t pay me in full! I had to fight, I had to threaten, I reached out to my FB crew group, but didn’t mention his name or the boat name. So much support and information there to help me resolve this. He saw the post and got mad. I didn’t back down and he paid me in full this morning
This better get easier or else!
First, that is absolutely ridiculous he wouldn’t pay you in full! Even when you jumped in and did more than what was required. I am glad you fought for what you deserve. You got this!
I am so proud of you for being brave enough to follow your dreams! It is absolutely amazing!

I am so sorry people can just be assholes and take advantage. His loss for sure. Be done with that one. Learned lesson. Good luck out there.
