Had to have a talk

The long days got longer, the expectations higher from what I’d signed up for in my interview. A relative of the boss came on with friends as our guest. She had a different idea of my job description than I did, and possibly her idea aligned more with what my boss was thinking. I felt slightly ganged up on. But checked myself to not react. I thought, this is simple. If he’s wanting more than I’m willing to give, we simply part ways and he flies me back to Ft. Lauderdale, where I connect with a new yacht. No stress. He shared his concerns, I shared mine.

He called an old friend of his who has been a captain in the industry for years. He asks him, “what am I doing wrong? I hired her to do a job and now she seems unhappy and I may lose her”. The captain replied..does she have good work ethics? —-“yes”—-is she a good human?—-“yes”—do you have chemistry, do you laugh together?—-“yes”—-“then you do whatever it takes to keep her. Those traits are what is hard to come buy. Invest in someone like that or you can keep hiring and firing people not worth the investment. So he offered me beyond what I expected. And I’m not just talking money. He seriously rethought my job description and even told the guests they would be helping me wash dishes and dry the boat. I said absolutely not. This IS my job, I’m happy to do it. You guys go enjoy. It was the perfect conversation that had to be had. I worked 10.5 hours HAPPILY, then went to a lovely dinner came back to the boat and had wine and partied with the owner and his guests. Now that expectations are aligned, I want to do more. Now that expectations are aligned, when I do more it’s noticed and recognized. So before we both go on vacation tomorrow, I sat in my sundress at 10:00 at night making sure the bilge was completely dry, so we don’t come home to a smelly boat.
